Soft hackle can complement both dry flies and flies that ride just below the surface. Adding a soft-hackle dropper to common emergers will transform them into a real-looking insect emerging out of its nymphal shuck. This is a great way to make a cripple imitation move and get a selective trout to take. MYSIS: DEAD OR ALIVE? Problem: I can’t decide which Mysis to use in high or low water. Solution: Determine whether the crustacean is alive in high water or dead in low water, and match the pattern accordingly.

Leeches are often olive, black, or brown; scuds, tan or olive; crane flies, tan or olive; and sow bugs are often gray. One of my favorite high water rigs is a lead fly consisting of a leech, scud, or sow bug, followed by a dropper Barr’s Crane Fly Larva. This heavy fly looks the part and becomes the main weight, making deep tension drifts a realty in the most turbulent of waters. HOT LEGS Problem: The fish are literally bumping my hopper out of the way to not eat it. Solution: Try a hopper imitation with brightly colored legs.

For stillwater trout and anadromous fish, insect size changes in reverse. When insects and other food supplies are growing to maximum potential, you want to oversize the fly to get a reaction from cruising trout. A great example of this for stillwater trout is midges, which are known to reach #18 to #14 or even larger. Trout look for these jumbo meals. To induce a take from the trout that are cruising to feed, not holding still like trout in moving water, I will upsize to a #12 midge in the hope that my imitation is more visible to the moving target.
